Before & After | mixing

Please listen with high-quality speakers or headphones for best results

1. Pop-folk tune recorded in small room with severe microphone bleed issues. Before and after versions display the difference between the unmixed (left / top) and mixed version (right / bottom). Download the lossless files (FLAC) for the most accurate comparison as Soundcloud streams at a lower quality.

  • In the mixed version improvements were realized in the sonic space, stereo field and clarity of the individual instruments; especially the vocals.
  • There were many sibilance/plosive issues in the lead and background vocals that had to be dealt with and overall mix clarity needed work.
  • The tone and punch of various instruments were adjusted via equalization and compression for a richer/more pleasing mix.

2. Blues tune recorded in small, untreated room displaying the difference between the unmixed (left / top) and mixed version (right / bottom). Download the lossless files (FLAC) for the most accurate comparison as Soundcloud streams at a lower quality.

  • In the mixed version I dealt with bass and kick mud/clarity issues as well as source material problems with the overall drum sound (i.e. listen for better definition in the 2nd example).
  • There was also sibilance to be dealt with in the vocals and overall mix clarity needed work.
  • The tone and punch of various instruments were adjusted via equalization and compression.
  • Listen for a more defined sound of each instrument in the 2nd example especially the bass and drums.

3. Electronic tune displaying the sonic differences between the unmixed (left / top) and mixed version (right / bottom). Download the lossless files (FLAC) for the most accurate comparison as Soundcloud streams at a lower quality.

  • For comparison these are the same stereo files (excluding minor compositional changes in the mixed version).
  • Neither version is mastered and they are of equal average RMS power for accurate comparison (-22 dB). RMS is used for measuring the perceived loudness of music.
  • I dealt with mix issues to achieve better overall clarity, punch and definition of the instruments involved.

4. Folk tune recorded in small room with prominent noise floor issues (i.e. hiss). Before and after versions display the difference between the unmixed (left / top) and mixed version (right / bottom). Download the lossless files (FLAC) for the most accurate comparison as Soundcloud streams at a lower quality.

  • Notice the greatly improved sound stage or stereo image from the unmixed version to the mixed version; more width and depth.
  • The vocal clarity and tonal quality have been improved as they are the central focus of the tune.
  • The overall clarity and quality of the recording was improved by reducing the hissing heard in the unmixed version.
